This meeting is part of the Commission’s ongoing review of election preparedness in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Chief Election Commission’s Visit to West Bengal
The Election Commission’s delegation, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, is conducting a three-day visit to West Bengal from March 8 to March 10. The team includes Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The TMC will articulate its perspective during this interaction, aiming to address key issues related to the electoral process in the state.
Protests Mark the Commission’s Arrival
Upon their arrival in Kolkata on Sunday, the Election Commission members faced demonstrations from local residents near the airport. Protesters gathered outside a hotel in New Town, displaying banners that read “Go back, Gyanesh Kumar, murderer of democracy,” and exhibited black flags as the Chief Election Commission’s convoy passed by outside the airport.
Meetings with Political Parties and Officials
During their stay, the Election Commission officials are scheduled to meet with representatives from various political parties, along with senior administrative and police officials.
